That's a tough one. Both refers to "brown", "brownish". You hear "castaƱo" applied to hair. "Esa chica tiene pelo castaƱo". "Moreno" can be used to refer to someone with dark skin. "Ese muchacho es moreno / tiene piel morena". You hardly ever hear them.

I thought that describing someone with brunette or dark hair was "Moreno or morena" or maybe pelo oscura.
Is that correct?
How would I know when to use castaƱo?

Pelo oscuro sounds like black or dark brown.
Pelo castaƱo is brown or light brown.
In order to have a better idea of the color, use Google Images. It is difficult to explain it by words.

CastaƱo = "Brown" hair
Moreno = "Black" hair
It is not that difficult conceptually, although in the practise many people will argue about whether a certain colour should be considered as "dark brown" or "brownish black" hahaha
