Need -> Something you cannot be without, but may not be what you wish for
Want -> Something you wish for, but may not be what you cannot be without

Example:
You need water and food to stay alive.
You want an ice cream.
Explanation:
Needs are something that you have to have.
Wants are things you desire.
Exceptions :
You could still say: “I need a beer.”
When you say this, it will be understood that you really want a beer, but you don’t need it to survive.
Saying this is just a different way of emphasizing that maybe you had a hard day and really want a beer to help you unwind.
