The words do mean the same thing , however they cannot always be used fully interchangeably.
Examples:
I’m under the weather (idiom meaning feeling mildly ill or sad).
But you cannot say I’m underneath the weather.
Underneath is often used in a poetic way, in song lyrics etc.
You can also use underneath and beneath without a following noun, which you cannot do with under.
You can say ‘What lies beneath?’ (poetic, literary) but not ‘what lies under’ You would have to say what lies under the bed
Beneath (especially) and underneath are more formal sounding.
What are you wearing under your clothes? Common to say
What are you wearing underneath your clothes? Still OK but not quite as natural sounding.
And ‘beneath’ is almost entirely used in a formal sense. I cannot imagine a native English speaker asking ‘What are you wearing beneath your clothes?’ in everyday conversation.
If using as a comparison with ‘over’ you would use ‘under’ more usually than ‘underneath’
Examples: The price was over what I expected.
The price was under what I expected.
You would not use ‘the price was underneath what I expected’
Example: I took him under my wing - idiom meaning you helped someone less experienced
Again you would not say underneath my wing
In most conversation, you cannot go wrong using ‘under’
‘Underneath’ MIGHT be incorrect in an idiom or sound too formal but people would still understand what was meant.
