Here you have two different tenses - Past Simple (I didnât) and Present Perfect (I havenât). Unfortunately, they are often exactly the same when translated into other languages.
Past Simple is used when the action didnât happen at a specific time in the past:
âI didnât go to the cinema LAST FRIDAYâ
âJack didnât have dinner YESTERDAYâ
We often use âI didnât + infinitive (first form of the verb)â with time markers such as:
- YESTERDAY
- LAST (night, Friday, week, month, year)
- (three days, two weeks, six months) AGO
Present Perfect is used in the negative when the action hasnât happened yet, but it can happen in the future:
âI havenât seen any James Bond movies (but I can in the future)â
âJack hasnât had dinner today (but he can eat before the day is finished)â
âI havenât + past participle (third form of the verb)â is often used with time markers such as:
- YET
- RECENTLY
- LATELY
and unfinished time periods such as:
- TODAY
- THIS (week, month, year)
