They’re pretty much the same. If I had to pinpoint a difference, I would say ‘ban’ means you are not allowed to do something, and ‘prohibition’ means efforts are made to stop people from doing something, but most of the time they can be used interchangeably.
E.g the government has banned marijuana
E.g the authorities prohibited shops opening before 6:00am
E.g the school prohibits chewing gum
E.g there is now a ban on owning firearms
E.g we’re starting a petition for the parliament to ban large dogs
