@2020marjan esattamente. In alternativa puoi dire "in fondo alla pentola c'è un pezzo di pane". Sono due forme equivalenti

Dipende da quello che vuoi dire. Purtroppo è un po' complicato ma la chiave è "IL".
Queste sono due soluzioni:
A) Io cammino IN fondo AL bosco (in fondo... dove? al bosco)
B) Io cammino NEL fondo DEL bosco (nel fondo.. di cosa? del bosco)
A) Mi immergo IN fondo AL mare
B) Mi immergo NEL fondo DEL mare
A) è più comune.

Potresti trovare anche SUL + DEL con il significato di SOPRA.
Quindi è giusto dire che
- sul fondo del mare c'è la sabbia,
- sul fondo della pentola c'è un pezzo di pane,
ma è sbagliato dire
- sul fondo del bosco,
perché "sopra il fondo del bosco" non ha senso.
