Question about English (US)

Could you please help me with choosing the right verb tense in this sentence:
Dan: Did you have a sleeping bag?
Jeff: Yes. Luckily, I had just bought a really good one that (go on sale) for only $35.

I'm wavering between Past Simple and Past Perfect. As far as I understand, Past Simple can be used there since buying a sleeping bag is a complete action with an implied time reference (that time he was at the store) but there also Past Perfect can be used since sleeping bag going on sale happened before he had bought it
