yang its like na (那). You may use when you want to ask Yang mana satu awak suka (which one you like it?)
you can omit yang from the sentence apa yang awak makan.

Apa means “what”
Yang however has multiple uses. I would say it’s equivalent to which, that, who, of, one, this and so on.
For example:
Which dress did you choose? - Awak pilih gaun yang mana?
I have to choose that one - Saya pilih yang itu
He is the man I have been telling you about - Dialah lelaki yang saya selalu ceritakn itu.
Which of these is better? - Mana diantara ini yang lebih baik?
That one is way better - Yang ini lebih baik
