"Zapatos" are shoes. "Zapatillas" is a comfortable showwear, in particular slippers or bedroom slippers. Many people will also use "zapatillas deportivas" to refer to sneakers or tenis shoes.

that depends of the part of Spain that you are in, I myself call 'zapatillas' to the same kind of shoes that @EduAH talks about
