'Check this out' is much more informal and used with friends or people you are comfortable with, but they are both used in the same way

@13heesang: They are the same.
But, "check this out," is more colloquial. It's a common thing to say in a casual setting or if you are surprised by something.
"Look at this," is the same but, gives a feeling of not really being urgent or surprising.
For example:
Woah, check this out! I just got $100 in my birthday card.
vs. "Look at this card I got in the mail." See the difference?
