@natalie_p: I think さん would be better to use at first, and you guys get to know each other, then ask them what they want to be called.
Usually ちゃん is for girls and くん is for boys. I don't think men might want to be called with くん since it sounds a bit immature for their age when they are old enough to live by themselves. I hope this helps.

@natalie_p: yes, you might want to use ちゃん after your female friend's first name. Some people call their friend her first name without ちゃん when they are very close to each other. Using さん with a first name sounds more formal, while using ちゃん sounds more friendly or closer.
I almost forgot! It's very rare to use ちゃん with a family name. Sometimes a few people use ちゃん with a family name to tend to sound friendly, but it's always better to avoid ちゃん with a family name. くん works fine with both a first name and a family name.

@natalie_p: どういたしまして(*^^*)
ところで、first nameは名前と言い、 family nameは苗字(みょうじ)と言います。While 苗字 only means a family name, 名前 is used for both a first name and a full name. I hope this helps. :-)
