Want is something you don't need to survive, whereas a need you do. For example, I need to eat food, and I want a new cd. You need the food to survive, but you do not need the new CD.
Survive also doesn't just mean living, you could need someone's help on a project to get a good grade or keep your job. But you could also want someone's help on a project because they know a lot about the subject or they are really good at it.
