Question about German
How would you say "hello" to someone if you don't know what time of day it is, or you don't know what time of day they will see it - like here on HiNative or in a letter or in an email?
How would you say "hello" to a friend?

With friends (and most internet forums) we use "Hi" or "Hallo" or "Hey" or ...
In an email we also greet people with "Hallo". Except you are going for a more formal letter. In this case you should write in your first line "Sehr geehrte (r) Frau/ Herr [+last name]".

@Kanda_nai Vielen Dank. No, I want to keep it informal. The person isn't a close friend, but I consider them a friend.
I think we would both be comfortable with "hi" or "hallo".
