Long answer:
As the other person said, it means “What Do You Mean”. You use this when you don’t understand something that someone has said. If there’s something specific that you don’t understand, you can say “Wdym by ___”.
The type of misunderstanding that it’s used for is when you understand the words in a sentence, but don’t understand what the person is implying. It can also be used for when you don’t agree with what the person is implying. It’s sorta like “what are you saying?!” .
For instance, let’s say someone asks
“How are you?” and you don’t know what the word “how” means. You wouldn’t say “Wdym by how?” You would say “what is how?” or “what does how mean?”
But, let’s say someone says
“Heh, women, am I right?! 🥴”
And you understand all the words, but you don’t understand/agree with what the person is implying. You can use “Wdym” so:
“Heh, women, am I right?! 🥴”
“Wdym bro.... women had nothing to do with this, that was all you 🙄”
Or
“Hey, maybe we can be more than friends?”
“Lol Wdym? I don’t understand 😆😅”
