I think semantically, "akin to" is used more when things are part of the same "group" or when the similarly is "deeper" not just when they have things in common. If we both like Hawaiian pizza and play basketball, it would be strange to say "akin." If we share the same culture, have similar personalities, have the same values, and people often get us confused because it's like we're on the same wavelength, etc. etc. then using "akin" wouldn't be that weird.

Dogs and wolves are both canine, so "akin" makes sense here.

Admiration and love can feel like the same thing sometimes, so "akin" would also make sense.

The bird squawking example is more like hyperbole. Obviously, a person talking normally can't actually sound like that, but it's like I'm saying they're so similar, they're akin.
