Synonyms of "Trunk" and their differences
Q:
What is the difference between trunk and log ?
A:
@Joao054 : I'm assuming this question is about the botanic meaning each of these two words brings along. So from that viewpoint while 'trunk' names the entire chunkiest part of a big plant, that is the whole thickest stem of a tree, instead 'log' names a big piece of wood, which may even be the complete 'trunk' of a tree, or may be only a smaller part of it, or just a piece of a big branch. To put it naively 'log' is a large piece of wood, but it's not as big as the 'trunk' of the plant it was taken from. A dolt example: 'that log has been cut from the trunk of the tree fallen down in the backyard because of the storm'. Other two small examples: 'the weight of an old oak tree trunk can be of many tons', 'the wooden sculpture was carved out of a log like this'.

What is the difference between trunk and chest ?
A:
In the UK, I don't think there's much difference. I would imagine a chest being more sturdy - made from wood or metal. Trunks I think are lighter, often made of tough leather or very thick cardboard.
In America 'trunk' means the rear storage in a vehicle. We call that 'the boot' .
