I think "vacation" is more EE.UU and "holiday" more UK, but both are common enough in both places as far as I know.

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday in Argentina.

A: "Vacation" and "holiday" are synonymous. They mean exactly the same thing and neither is more formal than the other.

I think North Americans may be more inclined to say "vacation" but we do still use "holiday" whereas British/UK speakers are more likely to use "holiday".

A: In Canadian English, “holiday” often has the connotation of being a widely observed day of celebration & time off work/school for most people, e.g. Victoria Day, Christmas, Easter (Canada is supposedly secular, & yet a lot of its statutory holidays are...Christian). “Vacation” in Canadian English would be an individual break from work/school you booked yourself. The exceptions are “summer vacation” or “winter vacation”, which are when school stops for pretty much everyone at the same time. However, “summer holidays” & “winter holidays” are also acceptable.

“Going on holiday” is a more specifically UK English thing to say although you do hear it from some Canadians.
