A: There isn’t much of a difference. You can use both the same way. For example:

There are various foods to choose from at the buffet.
There are diverse foods to choose from at
the buffet.

I would just just say various is more casual than diverse.

A: You could use 'varied' in the past tense in place of 'were different' like: Their ideas varied.
Dictionary.com says you can use 'varied' in the present tense to describe things that are different but somewhat similar.

Personally, I'm not sure what the difference between the use of 'various' and 'varied' is. They are similar.

Example:
"There are various schools in the area." (Meaning there are a lot of schools) Vs "There are very diverse schools in the area." (Meaning there are a lot of different schools)

The time it took to cook the meals varied from dish to diah.
