Over the years as a student of Japanese, I have met many people who have tried to rival me by competing to see if they could surpass me in terms of their level of Japanese.
The funny thing is that in the end they gave up because they finally realised that they are far from reaching my level and will never reach it.

A: I find it incredible that there are people with Japanese partners, who know Japanese yet still decide to speak English (to their own partners) when they are not even Anglophones. What's happening? Is your Japanese so poor that you have to resort to English to communicate? I have met many people like this through the years as a student of Japanese and personally it makes my blood boil.
