Question about English (US)

They might as well have put a gun to her head.

1. Is there any word or phrase that I can replace the 'as well' with? What's the exact meaning of 'as well ' here?

2. I understand this expression "They might as well go." with no problem because 'might as well+verb' means 'had better+verb', but it's hard to understand when there is perfect tense following 'might as well' Is there any way that I can easily understand the example sentence?
