Question about English (US)
They might as well have put a gun to her head.
1. Is there any word or phrase that I can replace the 'as well' with? What's the exact meaning of 'as well ' here?
2. I understand this expression "They might as well go." with no problem because 'might as well+verb' means 'had better+verb', but it's hard to understand when there is perfect tense following 'might as well' Is there any way that I can easily understand the example sentence?

1. 'As well'는 '또한' 또는 '그만큼'이라는 의미로 사용됩니다. 이 문장에서 'They might as well have put a gun to her head.'는 '그들은 그녀의 머리에 총을 겨누는 것과 다름없었다.'라는 의미로 해석될 수 있습니다. 'As well'을 대체할 수 있는 표현으로는 'just as easily'나 'equally'를 사용할 수 있습니다.
2. 'They might as well have put a gun to her head.'

If so, the sentence "They might as well have put a gun to her head." means they didn't actually put a gun to her head but instead, they maybe threatened her in any other way?
- English (US)
Yes, they are using it figuratively, they didn’t actually put a gun to her head. If she had a baby, perhaps they kidnapped him or her to get her to do what they wanted. Of course she would do it to save her child. Upon hearing the news, we would then say that expression.

It's adding to what was said before. It's like saying: "They might also have put a gun to her head." The use of "as well" in that context sounds like some sort of disapproval (if used with irony) or surprise.

If I say (in spoken English) "They might have put a gun to her head as well.", can native speakers understand? Is this expression idomatic? I shifted "as well" to the back.
- English (US)
- Portuguese (Brazil)
It sounds grammatically correct, but it doesn't carry the same appeal as the first one. As pointed out by someone above, they didn't actually do it. If you want to show exaggeration in your hypothesis, "as well" right after "might" is the right call. "As well" at the end of the sentence is grammatically ok but it's not as idiomatic. It'd be understood, but certainly would lose its impact.

I just wanted to comment that VCMarcello’s follow-up answers to my original reply were spot-on. 👍🏽 Glad that we were able to resolve your questions.
As an aside, you could substitute “figuratively, metaphysically, or symbolically” for “might as well.”
