What’s the difference between “to film” and “to record”?
What’s the difference between “to film” and “to record”?
Answers

"to film"和"to record"这两个词在英语中有一些不同之处。
首先,“to film”通常指的是用摄像机或摄影机拍摄视频或电影。这个词通常与电影制作或拍摄相关联。例如,"They are filming a new movie in Hollywood."(他们正在好莱坞拍摄一部新电影。)
而“to record”则更广泛地指录制声音或视频。这个词可以用于描述录制音乐、录制讲话、录制会议等各种场景。例如,"She is recording her new song in the studio."(她正在录制她的新歌曲在录音室。)
因此,总的来说,“to film”更专注于使用摄像设备拍摄影像,而“to record”则可以用于描述录制声音或视频的各种情况。

They are essentially the same. "record" can refer to audio recording as well as video recording. But that's all I can think of.

@FT43 @seojungmi Thanks. So “record a video”, “film a video”, “record a movie”, “film a movie”, “record a film”, and “film a film” all sound natural, right?
- English (US)
no, they mean the same thing but depending on what is being recorded/filmed one of the words is more common to use than others
“record a video” / “film a video” both are fine, record is more casual sounding
“film a movie” is more used to refer to professional movies.
“record a film” in this case, it is more common to say “shoot” a film
“film a film” unnatural, people don’t say this because it sounds too repetitive. “shoot a film”

@seojungmi Thanks for the information! Can I say “shoot a video” and “shoot a movie”? Just wanted to check if “shoot” would work with the other words :)
- English (US)
yes both phrases sound natural!
slight difference is that “shoot a video” is for casual things like a youtube vlog, quick tiktok video, etc but “shoot a movie” would be for something more elaborate like a feature film

film is video and record can be audio or video or both. :)

Recording can refer to audio or video, film only refers to video. Also “film” isn’t really correct since we don’t use physical film to record video anymore, everything is digital now.

@Caleb_E I’m not sure what you mean by “film” isn’t really correct. It’s incorrect when using “film a film” like @seojungmi said?
- Simplified Chinese (China)
@papaya__ @seojungmi Thank you both. So we cannot say “record/film a vlog”, “record/film a reel”, “record/film a clip”, etc. because “shoot” is used for casual things, right?
- English (US)
he means physical film cameras, like the old ones that you would have to develop and scan are not used like the digital technology cameras we have now. however people still say “film” as just a verb now too with digital camera innovation (it is something that has carried over), like people commonly still say “film a movie” even when they are not using those types of film cameras
“film a film” is more so referring to it sounds awkward/unnatural because it sounds repetitive
oh no, sorry i meant that shoot a “video” is usually something casual whereas shoot a “movie” is more like a movie theater film, “shoot” can be used for both casual and more elaborate mediums

@seojungmi That’s an awesome explanation! 👍🏻 Do all of these sound natural to you?
“record/film/shoot a vlog”
“record/film/shoot a reel”
“record/film/shoot a clip”
“record/film/shoot a live photo”
And I have another question for you about pronunciation. How do Americans pronounce “Noel”? [noh-el] with the stress on the second syllable, right? [noh] sounds like “no”, [el] sounds like the letter L.

@brandon4 You would say “make a film” or “film a movie” but not “film a film”. What I meant is that the term “film” to refer to recording video is technically wrong considering we no longer use film in our cameras. “Film” is what the material is called that we used to use to record video. Cameras are digital nowadays and don’t use film.

@Caleb_E Ok, so it is technically wrong to say “film” as a verb but Americans still use it anyway because it’s a usage that has passed down from the past. I think it’s just like nowadays we do not actually roll down the window, but we still say “roll down” for the car window.
Can I ask two more questions? (1) Do all of these sound natural to you?

@brandon4 yes that’s correct.
Record a vlog, make a vlog, or just “vlog” used as a verb.
Record a reel.
Record a clip, film a clip
Make a video, record a video. I think “Live Photo” would just be a video right? I haven’t heard that used before.
“Noel” is pronounced “Noh-el” with emphasis on “el”

@Caleb_E “Live photo” is a special photo designed by Apple. Most Americans have an iPhone according to the statistics, so I bet you guys definitely have a way to express that. Is the term “live photo” not used by Americans? It is not exactly a picture, not exactly a video. It’s a single unit that’s shown as a picture on your phone but when you tap it, it becomes a video and has voice.
