In Japanese, the word '人' (hito) means "person" or "individual." It is a singular form used to refer to one person. On the other hand, '人々' (hitobito) is the plural form of '人' and is used to refer to a group of people or multiple individuals.
For example:
- この町にはたくさんの人が住んでいます。 (kono machi ni wa takusan no hito ga sundeimasu) - "Many people live in this town." (using '人' to refer to people in general)
- 人々が祭りの準備をしています。 (hitobito ga matsuri no junbi o shiteimasu) - "The people are preparing for the festival." (using '人々' to refer to a group of individuals)
So, while '人' is used to talk about individuals, '人々' is used when referring to a collective group of people.

@lertuce Properly speaking, 人 refers to a person (singular), while 人々 refers to people (plural). But actually they are sometimes interchangeable.
For example,
・会場には大勢の人がいた。
・会場には大勢の人たちがいた。
I don't think there's much of a difference between them.

Basically:
人 = 1 - a few people; human being
人々 = a few - a lot of people; everybody
However “人” is often used for referring to a lot of people or a crowd.
