Q: What has changed for you since arriving in New Zealand? Coming to New Zealand was the biggest event of my whole life, and that made me changed in some positive way. Today I'm going to talk about the positive changes arose to me.

When I was in Korea, I had given up learning English. I was learning Chinese so I didn’t feel necessary for learning more language, like English. Also, the level of the English class was adjusted to the students going after school study and learning dozens of new vocabularies every day so it was hard for me to follow the class. When I’d given a writing task in English class, I couldn’t even write a single sentence and my friend had to write everything for me. Once I had to give a speech in the English class, I copied all the sentences in the textbook and changed some words like my name, age, etc. However, I came here and started feeling comfortable using English. I've improved my English skills a lot and expanded my vocabularies last eleven months. Now I can easily do the writing tasks, talk to my friends, and give a speech in English.

Before I came here, I was really obsessed with my appearance. I wanted to be perfect and always worried that I would lose my looks. I had a lot of makeup on and I couldn't step outside without makeup. I felt unhappy and stressed but because of the lookism around Korean culture, I couldn’t get out of the obsession. However, here New Zealand, most of the girls don’t put much makeup on and people don’t judge other people’s appearance easily. I realized that beauty is more than what’s on the surface and it’s time to start concentrating qualities that accentuate my inner rather than external beauty. I put makeup much lesser than before and I don't care how I look or how other people think about myself. It made me concentrate on my study and what I like to do.

My school life in New Zealand made me open-minded. I haven't been to other countries except for Japan until I came to New Zealand so I didn't know much about other countries and their cultures. I didn't know where New Zealand is, what language they use. Before I came here, I was worried if people in New Zealand will not like Asian people, but It was a totally wrong idea. People are being really nice to me and international students. When I struggle with something, they gave me a hand first. Also, I had a bad image of some other countries because of the social media in Korea. But I have met many international students and realize they are just teenagers, same as me. I have got a nice Thai friend and I've been learning the Thai language.

Last eleven months I have experienced huge changes in culture, conditions and I have developed myself one step further. I've improved my English skills and stopped obsessing with my appearance. I also opened my sight looking many different people and cultures. I have developed myself one step further and I am happy now.
