The meaning of "Back" in various phrases and sentences

Synonyms of "Back" and their differences

Q: What is the difference between back up and support ?
A: They can be used interchangeably in some informal circumstances, but in general:

"Back up" has the feeling of physically being there to help someone, imagine they "have your back" as the English expression goes, they are literally behind you, at your back, helping out. It doesn't have to be in person...if you are getting into an argument with someone on Facebook and are too tired to keep explaining, you might ask a friend "Hey Janet, I need some back up here! Can you back me up?"

If you say "a backup" it has the meaning to kind of replace something/someone in case anything happens. "I need a backup person for this job" or "I need a backup of that file"

In another meaning not related, "back up" means to go backwards, such as "back up the car" if you are reversing.

Support is used A LOT MORE than back up. It is a very general term and really it's a very soft and commonly used way to ask for help or assistance, it is used in business settings a lot too. "I'm going through a hard time emotionally, I could really use some support"
"What sort of support do you need to be successful in your new job?"

To give an example with both, though once again you will hear "support" 95% of the time:
"I could really use some support on this project" - has the sense of any type of support, unless someone says what the support is specifically.
"I could really use some back up on this project" - has the sense that you are asking for one or more team members to really be present and helping a to carry the load of a project.
"I could really use A backup on this project" - you are specifically asking for one or more person to be the default person, in case for example you had to go on vacation

Okay that ended up being really long!
